Why Learning Never Stops for CAD Managers by Eric DeLeon (CAD Manager School)

One of the most valuable lessons I have learned over my 26-year career is that embracing change is the key to staying ahead. The AEC industry is constantly evolving with new tools and methods. Being a CAD Manager is not just about keeping up with software updates. It is about understanding new ways to improve project delivery, like BIM, Digital Twins, and Digital Delivery. The best leaders do not resist change. They adapt, experiment, and find ways to make new tools work for their teams.
Just as technology evolves, so must leadership. As John F. Kennedy said, "Leadership and learning are indispensable to each other." CAD Managers are more than technical experts. They guide their teams through challenges and help them grow. Strong leadership requires continuous learning, whether through books, podcasts, or workshops. It is not about having all the answers but staying open to new ideas and fostering a culture of growth.
Being a great leader also means balancing technical skills with people skills. Knowing how to use CAD and BIM software is essential, but the most effective CAD Managers also communicate well, solve problems, and lead with confidence. Developing soft skills like emotional intelligence and active listening helps build stronger teams. Investing in resources like LinkedIn Learning and CAD Manager School courses can improve both technical and leadership abilities. A great CAD Manager is not just an expert in software. They bring out the best in their team.
One of the best ways to keep learning is by connecting with others. You do not have to figure everything out on your own. Engaging with other CAD Managers through communities like CAD Manager School and AUGI Community or attending industry events like Autodesk University and AUGI CON provides fresh ideas and insights. Learning from others makes the job easier and more rewarding. The more you engage with your peers, the more you grow.
Staying relevant also requires a growth mindset. The best CAD Managers see challenges as opportunities to improve. When things change, they do not panic. They look for ways to adapt and learn. Taking time to read an article, watch a tutorial, or explore a new tool keeps your skills sharp. Encouraging your team to do the same builds a culture where everyone thrives.
The journey of learning never ends. Being a CAD Manager is not just about software. It is about leading, adapting, and always improving. Every step forward, whether through reading, courses, or networking, helps you and your team succeed.
So the only question is, what will you learn next?
